Chapter Four

Christmas morning was chilly early in the morning, and Suze slipped out of bed quietly, hoping to get downstairs before anyone else. Her mother had taken care of putting out all of “Santa’s” gifts last night, but she wanted to start breakfast and have a few minutes to breathe before the insanity started. They had a visiting child with them—with nothing under the tree—and no way to reach his mother. She felt a heaviness in her chest as she thought about the way the media had shown up last night as if they’d known two of the Sidewinders were going to be there. In retrospect, it felt a little contrived and she wondered if Melanie had somehow been counting on them going after her. Had she planned it, and if so, why? She didn’t believe Cody was Ivan’s father, so what could Melanie hope to gain from this? There was no doubt she had ulterior motives, but Suze couldn’t come up with a single one and it bothered her.

Suze was startled to see her father-in-law in the family room wrapping presents.

“Dad?” She frowned at him. “What are you doing up so early?”

“Well, we couldn’t let the little one go without gifts,” he said with tired smile. “I ran over to the 24-hour Walmart and picked up some things. Not sure what he likes, but it has to be better than nothing, right?”

“Thank you.” She smiled down at him. “That was really thoughtful. I was wondering what we were going to do.”

“Not the boy’s fault his mother lost her mind,” he said, continuing to wrap.

Cody looked a lot like his father, tall and lean, with the same blue eyes. Sam Armstrong’s hair was turning from blond to white now, but his blue eyes still twinkled and he kept himself in good shape. She imagined that this was what Cody would look like in 25 years and the thought warmed her on an otherwise depressing day.

“You doin’ okay, doll?” Sam asked after a moment. “You and Cody okay?”

“We’re fine,” Suze said quietly. “I don’t believe Ivan is Cody’s son. Cody didn’t cheat until I told him I wouldn’t sleep with him anymore. He has no reason to lie about this because I already knew there were women. If he says she wasn’t one of them, then she wasn’t one of them.”

“You’re a good woman, Suze.” Sam put the last of the gifts under the tree and stood up. “Do you need help with breakfast?”

“No, I’m just going to make a pot of coffee for you guys and a cup of tea for myself before everyone gets up.”

“I’ll sit with you.” He ambled into the kitchen behind her and they worked in companionable silence as she filled the tea kettle and he brewed some strong black coffee. They’d barely finished when Cody padded into the room, hair tousled from sleep.

“Mornin’, Dad. Merry Christmas.” He smiled at his father as he pulled Suze into his arms. “Merry Christmas, beautiful.”

“Merry Christmas, babe.” She kissed him lightly.
